Gaza

2024

This painting responds to the ongoing daily reports of civilian deaths in Gaza. An injured woman's direct gaze confronts the viewer without narrative resolution, positioning the face as a site of witness rather than illustration. The surrounding city dissolves into smoke and fragmentation, evoking a landscape shaped by sustained violence and erasure. By isolating a single figure, the work resists the abstraction of mass suffering and insists on individual presence within collective catastrophe. The slow, figurative process counters the speed at which images of violence are consumed and forgotten, questioning the distance between witnessing and action.
